Seminar on “Alcoholism and Alcoholics Anonymous” was held at the Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36 B, Chandigarh on October 1st, 2009. This lecture was a part of a series of lectures organized by Department of Higher Education, UT Administration in different colleges of the city.
The key speaker on this occasion was Dr. Mahesh from De-addictiction Centre PGI, Chandigarh. He , imparted valuable information about the various aspects related to alcoholism and ways to recover from it. He stated that Alcoholism is a progressive illness. It is compulsive drinking which makes the individual victim of illness. This condition if uncontrolled may have severe repercussions in the form of insanity, premature death and in certain cases complete sobriety. He also highlighted the Twelve Steps and Twenty Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. A live example of Mr. Naresh was cited who joined the group and managed to recover from alcoholism successfully.
The lecture was followed by an interactive session in which the students and the faculty actively participated.
On the same day, the Blood Bank Society of the College, celebrated ‘World Blood Donation Day’. Students presented a motivational skit titled “Samay Di Pukar – Raktdaan”. Some of the NSS Volunteers of the college also planted saplings of medicinal plants in Old Age Home, Sector 15, to mark the ‘World Elders’ Day’.
